A tragic incident in Mpumalanga on Thursday claimed the lives of four individuals, including an American tourist, in a collision between a police vehicle and a bakkie on the R540 road between Dullstroom and Belfast.
According to Col Donald Mdhluli, spokesperson for the police, the accident occurred in the afternoon when a marked police vehicle and a white double-cab bakkie collided head-on. Upon reaching the scene, Dullstroom police found that both vehicles had suffered severe damage from the impact. Sadly, a 45-year-old police constable was pronounced dead at the scene.
The occupants of the bakkie, consisting of two women and one man, were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Tragically, both women succumbed to their injuries later, and on Friday afternoon, it was reported that the male occupant had also passed away due to his injuries.
Col Mdhluli mentioned that one of the deceased women was a tourist from the United States. The exact cause of the accident remains under investigation. Maj-Gen Zeph Mkhwanazi, Acting Police Commissioner of Mpumalanga, expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased, emphasizing the tragic loss of life and offering thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
