South Africans remember iconic Muvhango moments as it comes to an end after 27 years

Following the surprising announcement of Muvhango’s conclusion, fans flooded social media to reminisce over the soapie’s unforgettable moments and legendary actors who graced screens over its 27-year run. Debuting on SABC2 in 1997, Muvhango, a beloved Tshivenda drama, offered a glimpse into life in Thohoyandou, blending traditional Venda rural life with modern urban dynamics.

It quickly became a staple for many South Africans, particularly the Venda community, who found their stories authentically portrayed on television, while also educating viewers from diverse backgrounds about Venda traditions. The series revolved around the fictional Venda chief Vhafuwi Azwindini, portrayed by Gabriel Temudzani, delving into his family’s dynamics and his leadership’s impact on the village.

In a poignant tweet marking its final episode, Muvhango bid farewell, saying, “End of the road for Muvhango, thank you for watching all these years,” eliciting mixed emotions among its dedicated viewers.

As part of commemorating 30 years of democracy, SABC2 announced plans to air nostalgic episodes of Muvhango, starting from its inaugural season, to showcase its historical significance to new audiences. Caroline Phalakatshela, SABC’s publicist, highlighted, “Muvhango is the first Tshivenda TV drama, offering a window into one of South Africa’s most picturesque regions to viewers nationwide.”

Phalakatshela also expressed pride in the soapie’s enduring success, attributing its longevity to the exceptional talent of its cast, crew, and management team. The news spurred a wave of nostalgia on social media, with fans sharing cherished clips and recalling beloved characters like KK Mulaudzi, James, Azwindini Mukwevho, Dubsie, and Thandaza.
