Simone Biles qualifies for 2024 Olympics

Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens

Jonathan Owens, husband of Simone Biles, eagerly anticipates her participation in the 2024 Paris Olympics. “We’re going to Paris,” Owens, 28, shared on his Instagram Story on Sunday, June 30. “Man, I’m so proud.” Alongside his message was a snapshot of the scoreboard from the U.S. Women’s Gymnastics Olympics Trials in Minneapolis, where Biles, 27, claimed the top spot with a score of 117.225, surpassing Sunisa Lee and Jordan Chiles.

Biles, set to represent the U.S. for the third time, becomes the oldest American female gymnast to join the Olympic team since the 1950s. Her teammates will include Lee, 21, and Chiles, 23, both familiar faces from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, along with newcomer Hezly Rivera. Following the trials, Biles spoke to reporters, characterizing the upcoming competition as a “redemption tour,” emphasizing that “I feel like we all have more to give.”

Reflecting on their performance in Tokyo 2020, Biles noted, “We weren’t under the best circumstances. But I feel like we have a lot of weight on our shoulders to go out there and prove that we’re better athletes. We’re more mature, we’re smarter, we’re more consistent.”

“We do it for ourselves and the love for the sport and the love for representing the U.S.,” she continued. “So we’re going to go out there and we’re going to do our best.”

In 2020, Biles withdrew from several events at the Tokyo Olympics due to mental health challenges and experiencing the “twisties,” causing disorientation mid-air. Looking ahead to Paris, Biles dismissed concerns of a repeat scenario, stating defiantly, “They’ll still say, like, ‘Oh my gosh, are you going to quit again, are you going to quit again?’ And if I did, what are you going to do about it? Tweet me some more?”

Despite naysayers, Owens has consistently shown unwavering support. The couple, married since April 2023, have cheered each other on through their respective careers. When Biles clinched her ninth all-around title at the Xfinity U.S. Championships in Fort Worth, Texas, Owens took to Instagram to celebrate her achievement, exclaiming, “9th time! Amazing.”
