Sandra Ndebele caught in controversy over smuggled vehicle

Sandra-Ndebele

Sandra Ndebele, a well-known figure in Zimbabwean music, dance, and now politics with Zanu-PF, recently had her Toyota GD6 vehicle confiscated by Bulawayo police under suspicion of smuggling. Despite the seizure, Ndebele was not arrested. It remains unclear whether the vehicle was provided to her by her political party, Zanu-PF.

At 42 years old, Ndebele currently serves as a Zanu-PF councilor for Ward 20 in Bulawayo, a position she secured in last year’s by-elections. Reports indicate her surprise when police took her vehicle two weeks ago due to inadequate documentation concerning its importation into Zimbabwe. Ndebele did not respond to requests for comment on the incident.

In recent months, authorities in Zimbabwe and South Africa have ramped up efforts to intercept luxury vehicles being smuggled into Zimbabwe to evade taxes. Ndebele has previously been associated with controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo, who gifted her a Mercedes Benz GLE400d worth US$155,000 in February.

Known for her dynamic dance performances, Ndebele transitioned into politics following a slowdown in her music career. Initially appointed as Bulawayo’s representative for Young Women for Economic Development by Zanu-PF’s women’s league in August 2021, her ties to the ruling party sparked controversy. Despite initial denials by Zanu-PF, Ndebele later officially joined the party and contested in local government elections after the recall of Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) councilors and legislators. She had previously competed in the contentious August 2023 elections but was defeated by Simbarashe Dube of the CCC.
