Fourteen individuals have been apprehended by authorities in connection with the abduction of a Zimbabwean businessman, a group that includes three Chinese and two Mozambican nationals. The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday near the victim’s workplace, leading to a swift response from law enforcement. Colonel Athlenda Mathe, spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS), disclosed that a combined team, including the SAPS anti-kidnapping task force in Gauteng, various SAPS divisions, and private security firms, successfully located the businessman in Diepkloof, Soweto.

“Fourteen suspects were subsequently traced to different locations,” Mathe stated. “The initial eight were found in an apartment at Greenstone Park, with the remainder apprehended in Sandton.” During the operation, authorities seized multiple point-of-sale machines, a significant amount of cash withdrawn from the victim’s bank account, and two firearms, one of which was reported stolen during a house robbery in Linden in 2023.

Mathe emphasized recent successes in intercepting suspects associated with kidnapping syndicates, particularly those targeting businesspeople for ransom demands. “Communities are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities in their neighborhoods,” Mathe urged.

The SAPS special task force had recently rescued two victims from a kidnapping ordeal in Crystal Park, Benoni, just a week prior. According to Mathe, a 64-year-old man and a 34-year-old man were abducted while driving along Putfontein Road, prompting immediate ransom demands from their families. In that operation, one suspect was killed and another wounded during a confrontation with police, while four additional suspects were arrested.
