Fatal suffocation incident claims lives of two minors in Kuwadzana

A tragic incident struck a family in Harare on Monday, resulting in the deaths of two children due to asphyxiation from inhaling fumes emitted by a burning pot of rice. The victims, identified as Atidaishe Makechemu (10) and Atipaishe Makechemu (8), tragically passed away upon arrival at a local clinic. Their siblings, aged 14 and 4, along with their mother, were found unconscious and were promptly rushed to the hospital for urgent medical attention.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the distressing event, stating, “The ZRP reports a heartbreaking incident in which two juveniles lost their lives due to suspected suffocation at a residence in Kuwadzana Extension, Harare. The victims, along with their two siblings aged 14 and 4, and their mother, were discovered unconscious in a smoke-filled room.

A pot of rice, burnt beyond recognition, was found on the stove. The victims were immediately taken to a local clinic in Kuwadzana, where Atidaishe Makechemu (10) and Atipaishe Makechemu (8) unfortunately passed away upon admission.”

The remaining three family members were transferred to Sally Mugabe Hospital, where they are currently receiving medical care.
