Eight people tragically lost their lives on Sunday, with two others sustaining injuries, following a devastating road accident on the Ngundu-Tanganda road. The incident occurred at approximately 7:50 PM, involving a Toyota Probox (registration number AFD 7476) carrying nine passengers. According to authorities, the vehicle veered off the road, collided with a bridge pillar, and overturned multiple times, ejecting all passengers before coming to rest on its side.
In a statement issued on Monday, police confirmed the details of the accident, noting that the deceased victims were transported to Chiredzi Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations, while the injured were admitted to Collin Saunders Hospital and Chiredzi General Hospital for urgent medical care.
The incident underscores the ongoing safety challenges on Zimbabwean roads, which have been identified as among the most difficult globally, claiming an average of five lives daily due to traffic accidents. Public criticism has intensified against the government for its perceived failure to implement effective measures to curb such tragedies, exacerbated by difficulties in accessing timely medical assistance.
Last year, the government imported helicopters from Russia purportedly to enhance emergency response capabilities in such critical situations, yet there have been few updates regarding their deployment and operational effectiveness.
