Chitungwiza man jailed 20 years for murder

prison

A Chitungwiza man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the cold-blooded murder of his nephew, whom he suspected of stealing his radio speaker. Owen Katsande, along with accomplices who remain at large, was found guilty of premeditated and senseless murder by High Court judge Justice Munamato Mutevedzi.

According to court documents, Katsande accused the deceased, Robert Nyatsine, of stealing his musical instrument from his home in Chitungwiza. He then mobilized his friends to track down and punish the suspected thieves. The group rounded up several individuals, including Nyatsine, and subjected them to torture throughout the night, resulting in Nyatsine’s death.

Initially charged alongside his brother Farai, who was later acquitted, Katsande claimed in his defense that Nyatsine sought refuge at his residence after being assaulted at a beerhall by unknown assailants. Katsande asserted that he provided Nyatsine with accommodation, but the latter tragically passed away the following morning. The judge dismissed this defense and convicted Katsande, highlighting his lack of remorse and efforts to mislead the police.

“The offender did not approach the police out of respect for human life or remorse for his actions. Instead, he deliberately misled the authorities by falsely implicating unknown attackers from a beerhall,” stated Justice Mutevedzi.

Describing Katsande’s behavior post-crime, the judge noted, “The convict went into hiding and only reemerged a year later, coincidentally apprehended for unrelated offenses. His disappearance and lack of attendance at the deceased’s funeral do not reflect genuine remorse.”

Concluding the sentencing, Justice Mutevedzi remarked, “The offender’s actions post-murder demonstrate a lack of contrition and responsibility. His attempts to evade justice further underscore the severity of his crime.”
