In a significant legal development in Harare, lawyers Martin Murimirambewa and Shakespear Karuwa have been implicated in a fraud scandal amounting to US$500,000 involving businessman Frank Buyanga. The case, presided over by Magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa, centers on allegations dating back to 2009 when Chamunorwa Matsika of Monoliser Investments (Pvt) Ltd allegedly secured a US$30,000 loan from Buyanga, using property in Hurungwe valued at over US$500,000 as collateral.
Upon discovering that Buyanga’s office was closed and learning of his alleged involvement in multiple fraud cases, Matsika investigated further and found that his property had been transferred to Hamilton Property Ltd, prompting him to initiate civil proceedings.
Subsequent investigations revealed that Murimirambewa and Karuwa, along with Buyanga, allegedly manipulated processes to obtain a capital gains tax certificate and subsequently registered a deed of transfer at the Deeds Office without proper documentation. This purported fraudulent activity reportedly resulted in Matsika suffering a financial loss equivalent to the property’s substantial value.
Despite being released on bail pending further investigations scheduled for September 3, the case highlights serious allegations of collusion involving legal professionals and a prominent businessman. It underscores systemic vulnerabilities in property transaction oversight within Zimbabwe.
