19 guns found in Cape Town apartment

Over the weekend, authorities in Goodwood, Cape Town made a significant discovery following the routine stop and search of a motorist by the flying squad. Upon apprehending the 28-year-old driver of a double-cab bakkie, officers uncovered an unlicensed 9mm firearm, drugs, and a substantial amount of cash, according to Western Cape police spokesperson Col Andrè Traut.

Following this initial find, police proceeded to an apartment in the Bergzicht complex in Goodwood, expanding their search. There, they discovered an extensive cache that included 19 firearms of various calibers such as an AK47 assault rifle, a shotgun, and other automatic and semi-automatic firearms. Additionally, a variety of drugs valued at R3 million were seized.

Investigations suggest that the apartment, leased under the suspect’s name, was not used as a residence but rather as a storage facility for both firearms and drugs. Col Traut commented that the ongoing investigation may lead to the apprehension of more suspects involved in the illicit activities.

The arrest and subsequent seizure are seen as a significant step forward in combating gangsterism in the province, Traut added.
